7 Holiday Decorating Tips To Add Color To Your Home
By Kathryn Marsh
The holidays bring the usual hustle and bustle, leaving little time for decorating our homes for the season. Here are a few quick tips to add some color to your home. As they say, “There is no place like home for the holidays.”
1. The holly green.
Nothing is more welcoming for the holidays than a wreath hanging on your front door, greeting all who enter. There are so many different styles and colors to choose from, just find one that you like and carry the color from the front door through your home for a coordinated look.
2. Holiday cheer.
Fill vases of different heights with colorful, decorative Christmas balls and place them on your entrance table. You can keep them all one color or mix them up. A favorite of mine is to add a strand of white lights to the vases as they give a beautiful glow.
3. Comfort and joy.
Decorative pillows are really a quick and cost effective way to add the holiday charm to your home. They can easily convey your style from the traditional seasonal look to something more contemporary. Mix solid colors with patterns for a more interesting and varied look.
4. Deck the tables.
You don’t have to be a florist to have beautiful centerpieces on your table. Here is one I have used myself to great reviews. Place poinsettias on your dining table grouped in the center, or individually placed along the center.
Wrap the pots in festive colors using wrapping paper, fabric and table napkins or place them in decorative pots. Poinsettias come in a range of colors, so you are sure to find just the right color for you.
5. Baby it’s cold outside.
A throw is one of my favorite ways to add color while keeping warm, watching TV or reading a good book with a cup of hot chocolate. Keep them close by folding and placing them gracefully over the arm of a much-loved chair or sofa – solid, plaids and even furs. Let your style be your guide.
6. Let it glow.
What are the holidays without candles? They set the mood and add wonderful holiday scents, not to mention the beautiful colors they come in.
Candles do double duty during the season and can be placed anywhere you want that holiday glow. Grouped in centerpieces or as a stand-alone, remember to vary the heights for visual interest.
7. Visions of sugarplums.
Candy is definitely one of the quickest and easiest ways to add color and holiday cheer to your decor. Fill jars, vases and dishes of different height and sizes with colorful holiday candy.
Group them and place them on the coffee table, dining table and entrance table, in the kitchen or anywhere that is convenient for everyone to reach. This one is for the kid in all of us. Who can say no to candy?
Gone are the days when holiday color choices were limited to the traditional colors, now we have the whole color wheel to use. Be creative and have fun.
